Urban Climber Magazine Goes Green

Urban Climber Magazine, the leading youth-focused climbing magazine, today announced it will print on recycled paper starting with the February 2007 issue. A sponsorship with prAna, the outdoor apparel company, supports the magazine’s environmentally-friendly move. The initiative underscores Urban Climber Magazine’s commitment to the environment and the culture it serves.

“Since we launched, Urban Climber Magazine has always been about tomorrow,” said Mark Crowther, Founder and Publisher of Urban Climber Magazine. “By using recycled paper in each issue, every year we’ll save thousands of trees from being cut down and many garbage trucks of solid waste from heading to the landfills. Our readers – the new generation of climbers – are passionate and dependant on the environment, and doing our part to amplify this sentiment is as important to us as it is to them.”

The move to recycled paper was spearheaded in part by Urban Climber Magazine’s October 2006, “Green Issue” featuring prAna-sponsored professional climber, Chris Sharma, known for his work with the Access Fund and other environmental causes. While serving as a contributor to the issue, Sharma supported printing the magazine on recycled paper, which garnered tremendous reader feedback.

“Urban Climber Magazine’s decision to use 100% recycled paper echoes our passion for experiencing and protecting the outdoors,” said prAna’s Marketing Manager, Kari Kiel. “Our core followers come from climbing and yoga communities who, like us, believe that a healthy, active lifestyle goes hand-in-hand with preservation and conservation of natural resources.”

prAna will sponsor production of the magazine for the remainder of 2007. The decision to use recycled paper has been met with overwhelming positive response from the magazine’s readers.
