Professional climber and photojournalist Mark Synnott is adding another first to his résumé: first-ever guest editor of CLIMBING Magazine. It was announced Monday that The North Face athlete will edit the magazine’s epics-themed September issue (No. 260), on newsstands in late August.

“We’ve talked about doing another special issue on epics for awhile now, and, of course, Mark came immediately to mind,” said CLIMBING Editor Matt Samet in a statement. “He’s spent his time on the big walls and big-mountain routes, and knows the world of adventure, all of which makes him the perfect, authentic guest editor.”

Synnott, based out of New Hampshire, has been a long-standing contributor to CLIMBING, first interning with the Magazine in 1994. He’s now a Senior Contributing Editor, having authored stories as diverse as a feature profile on Bradford Washburn and a tale of bare-knuckled survival on the slopes of Mount Rainier. Synnott has also featured in Hot Flashes news, and once appeared on the cover, climbing on his native New Hampshire granite.

“Looking back on my 20 years of climbing, the one constant I can trace is my connection to this magazine. When I first discovered this sport, Climbing was my inspiration, its stories and photos filling me with dreams of epic adventure. Now, my latest epic has been helping put together this issue. I now have a profound appreciation for what it’s like to be an editor, and, believe me, epic’ing on the rocks — or even in bum world — is light by comparison,” commented Synnott.
